Sultanahmet and the Historic Peninsula: A Day in the Heart of Istanbul

For almost every visitor, Sultanahmet is the first stop in Istanbul. Centuries of Byzantine and Ottoman history stand side by side within a few hundred metres. The Historic Peninsula is easy to explore on foot; the key is planning the right route.

Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque

Facing each other across the square, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque form the city's most photographed view. Arrive early in the morning to see both before the crowds. When visiting mosques, keep prayer times and the dress code in mind.

Topkapi Palace

Home to Ottoman sultans for centuries, Topkapi Palace deserves at least a few hours for its courtyards, treasury and Harem. The view of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn from its rear gardens is worth the visit on its own.

Basilica Cistern and the Hippodrome

With its columns rising in dim light underground, the Basilica Cistern is one of the peninsula's most striking sights. On your way out, stop by the Obelisk and the Serpent Column in the Hippodrome to complete the walk.

How to plan the day

Spend the morning at Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and the afternoon at Topkapi Palace. In the early evening, walk through Gulhane Park to Sirkeci or Eminonu and finish the day by the Golden Horn. To reach Sultanahmet directly from the airport by private car, see our Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet transfer page.
