The Bosphorus: A Shore-by-Shore Journey Between Two Continents
Separating Europe from Asia, the Bosphorus captures the spirit of Istanbul like nowhere else. Palaces, historic waterside mansions, fortresses and small seaside neighbourhoods line this waterway from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara.
Palaces and waterside mansions
Dolmabahce Palace in Besiktas reflects the splendour of the late Ottoman era. Heading north, the wooden yali mansions of Arnavutkoy, Bebek and Yenikoy adorn the shore. They are best seen from the water, on a Bosphorus cruise.
Rumeli and Anadolu fortresses
Standing opposite each other at one of the narrowest points of the strait, the two fortresses witnessed the conquest of Istanbul. The view from the walls of Rumeli Fortress is one of the finest on the Bosphorus.
Bridges and the Maiden's Tower
Three bridges span the Bosphorus, linking the two continents. Off the coast of Uskudar, the Maiden's Tower offers one of the city's most romantic views at sunset.
Exploring the Bosphorus by land
You can also explore the Bosphorus by road, stopping at Ortakoy, Bebek, Emirgan and Sariyer along the coast. To travel stop by stop with a driver for the day, see our chauffeured car hire service, or our Istanbul tours for guided programmes.
