The Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar: A Centuries-Old Shopping Tradition
Istanbul's historic bazaars are living examples of a trading tradition that has lasted for centuries. Domed corridors, colourful stalls and conversations with shopkeepers turn shopping into an experience in its own right.
The Grand Bazaar
One of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, the Grand Bazaar is like a small city with hundreds of shops and interconnected streets. Carpets, kilims, ceramics, lamps, jewellery and leather goods are among the most sought-after items. The old caravanserais and fountains inside are also worth seeing.
The Spice Bazaar
The Spice Bazaar in Eminonu is a feast of scents and colours, with spices, nuts, Turkish delight and teas. The streets around it are also full of shops selling kitchenware and local products.
Shopping tips
Taking your time, comparing a few shops and chatting with the sellers makes shopping more enjoyable. Weekday mornings are quieter.
